Spotted! Up close pictures of the next Range Rover Sport.

Next_range_rover_sport

Land Rover is continuing its recent trend of sporting some of the most interesting camouflage in the automotive world. The machine bearing this mashup of fuzzy geometric shapes with an undeniable Volvo flair is none other than the 2014 Range Rover Sport, the smaller and sportier brother of the top-drawer Range Rover that we've seen out and about a bunch of times already.

As you can clearly see, there will be large air intakes in the front bumper, seemingly to feed the atmosphere into whatever forced-induction powerplant Land Rover chooses to wedge under the bonnet – we'd guess a couple of V8 options in the States and a turbodiesel or two in Europe, but we wouldn't be terribly surprised to see some downsized mills thrown in for good measure.

We're expecting the next Range Rover Sport to shed a good bit of weight from the current model, and rumor has it that the machine will be lower and wider, with a more pronounced sloping rear backlight to better differentiate the Sport from its more off-road-oriented sibling.

Tip of the Day: Lighten the load

Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE

Scale

Remove any excess items from your car. Less weight means better mileage. Carrying an extra 100 pounds in the trunk of your car may cut your car's fuel economy by 1 percent to 2 percent.  In addition, a loaded roof rack increases your car's air drag and can pull down your car's mileage by 5 percent. Avoid carrying items on your car's roof whenever possible.

The DC100 Expedition Concept

Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE

Expedition_concept

An expedition-ready version of the Land Rover DC100 concept vehicle is helping to shape the future of the iconic Defender line. Outfitted with an air-intake snorkel for wading, roof mounted equipment rack, and an integrated winch; this study in design is well equipped to explore the possibility of returning the Defender to the U.S. market.

Design cues for the 21st century share much of what made the original so distinctive. It all begins with the signature round lamps and prominent grill that form the honest Defender ‘face'. Short overhangs for extreme approach and departure angles, an upright windscreen, vertical panels, and strong shoulder line complete a design predicated on capability.

Technological advancements have been incorporated to simplify driving off-road while continuing to push Land Rover capability forward. The Terrain-i system shows whatever lies ahead as an intelligent topographical map displayed with 3D imagery. Wade Aid utilizes sonar sensors in bumpers and side mirrors to measure water depth while fording streams. And Terrain Response® has gotten a makeover with a new automatic version that eliminates the need for drivers to select a setting.

The DC100 concept also explores new territory in sustainability. An Intelligent Twin-Solenoid Stop/Start system is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission to ease future hybridization. Additionally, a Driveline Disconnect system automatically disengages four-wheel drive and does so physically, rather than electronically, to reduce friction losses. Despite this true decoupling, the system can almost instantaneously reengage drive.

While the ultimate destination for Defender is still unknown, the DC100 concept charges ahead, reinvigorating the line that lives in every Land Rover vehicle.

Tip of the Day: Place a towel under child car seats

All manner of food bits and liquids can accumulate under a baby seat, where they can permanently stain the upholstery. Place a sheet of heavy plastic and an absorbent towel under the seat to prevent damage, and re-secure the seat according to the manufacturer’s directions.

Tip of the Day: Protect your car paint from the sun

Paint does more than make your vehicle look great. It’s also the first line of defense against rusted body panels. Of course, the best way to protect the paint is to park the car in a garage. If that is not possible, park in the shade or purchase a car cover. The sun’s ultraviolet rays break down paint and cause it to fade. Some car covers protect your car from more than sun, moisture, bird droppings, and dust — they also have a thin layer of cushioning that will guard against light impact, such as from a tipped bicycle or small falling tree branch.
