2012 Concept 17 Defender by A. Kahn Design previewed

Defender_kit_concept

The British aftermarket specialists at A. Kahn Design have recently previewed their latest creation, a new styling kit for the Land Rover Defender, named the 2012 Concept 17 Defender.

A Kahn Design is mostly known for tuning larger SUVs but lately the company was quite busy developing just about everything you can imagine on the Range Rover Evoque and, after finally coming to its sense, the British tuner is going after an iconic model, the Land Rover Defender. According to the tuning company, the SUV in question has been named the 2012 Concept 17 Defender and it should hit the market over the following months.

“The neat, slim line frame of the 2012 Concept 17 Defender by A. Kahn Design set for release in the coming months ahead has created such a buzz that it made sense to escape the noise, and discuss just what is getting the industry talking”, as the tuner is saying in its official press release.

The 2012 Concept 17 Defender is getting a spare wheel cover, mud flaps or a bespoke paint job which can also be bullet proof as an optional feature and the Kahn 8×18 1983 RS Defender wheels, which will replace the stock ones. More details on the 2012 Concept 17 Defender will be announced over the following months.

Churchill

While the SUV buyers have their eyes set on the 2013 Range Rover, the vintage car lovers are waiting to place their bids to own one of the rarest, custom made Land Rover  once owned by Sir Winston Churchill. The vintage vehicle stored in a shed for 35 years is special for more then one reason. The original Series 1 Land Rover was given to the wartime prime minister as a present from car maker Rover on the occasion of his 80th birthday in November, 1954. The custom edition comes complete with registration number UKE 80 and has 12,932 miles on the clock.

The all-new Range Rover is the most capable and most luxurious Land Rover yet.  Lighter, stronger and with new levels of refinement, the Range Rover reinforces its position as the world's finest luxury SUV.

The fourth generation of the unique Range Rover line, the all-new model has been developed from the ground up, capturing the innovative spirit and iconic design of the original model which changed the world of motoring when it was launched over 40 years ago.

The world's first SUV with a revolutionary lightweight all-aluminium monocoque body structure is 39 per cent lighter than the steel body in the outgoing model enabling total vehicle weight savings of up to 420kg.

The lightweight aluminium platform has delivered significant enhancements in performance and agility, along with a transformation in fuel economy and CO2 emissions.

In addition to the strong and rigid lightweight body, an all-new aluminium front and rear chassis architecture has been developed with completely re-engineered four-corner air suspension. While the luxurious ride has been retained, the vehicle's handling and agility have been significantly improved.  The new suspension architecture delivers flatter, more confident cornering, with natural and intuitive steering feel.

John Edwards, Land Rover Global Brand Director, said: "The new Range Rover preserves the essential, unique character of the vehicle - that special blend of luxury, performance and unmatched all-terrain capability.  However, its clean sheet design and revolutionary lightweight construction have enabled us to transform the experience for luxury vehicle customers, with a step change in comfort, refinement and handling."

The all-new Range Rover has a clean and elegant shape which is derived from a fresh new interpretation of Range Rover design cues.  While instantly recognisable as a Range Rover, the new vehicle takes a significant step forward with a bold evolution of the model's iconic design language.

"Designing the next generation Range Rover, following over forty years of success, came with a huge responsibility to protect the DNA of such an icon," said Gerry McGovern, Land Rover Design Director and Chief Creative Officer.

"Our design team worked incredibly hard to capture the elegant proportions and pure surfaces which have been a feature of the best Range Rover designs."

With Land Rover strength at its heart, the new model has been engineered from the ground up to be the most capable, most refined Range Rover ever.

Amongst the industry-leading innovations is a ground-breaking next-generation version of Land Rover's Terrain Response® system, which analyses the current driving conditions and automatically selects the most suitable vehicle settings for the terrain.

To ensure exceptional durability and reliability, the new model has been subjected to Land Rover's punishing on- and off-road test and development regime, with a fleet of development vehicles covering millions of miles over 18 months of arduous tests in more than 20 countries with extremes of climate and road surfaces.

Within the cabin, the all-new Range Rover provides occupants with a sensation of serene isolation, meeting the highest luxury car standards for refinement.

Measures like the rigorously optimised body structure and acoustic lamination of the windscreen and side door glass have significantly reduced noise levels, while the new suspension architecture has enabled engineers to achieve even more luxurious ride comfort and refinement.

The sumptuous interior incorporates distinctive Range Rover design cues, but executed with a very contemporary treatment, and clean, elegant surfaces which are flawlessly presented using the finest leathers and veneers.  With over 118mm more legroom, the rear occupants benefit from vastly increased space and comfort, with the option of a new two-seat Executive Class seating package for the ultimate in rear-seat luxury.

To deliver the model's characteristic effortless performance, customers have the choice of refined V8 petrol engines and TDV6 and SDV8 diesel engines combining responsive performance with outstanding CO2 emissions.

The all-new Range Rover has been engineered with the latest developments in vehicle technologies, from interior luxury features such as exclusive Meridian surround sound music systems and power upper and lower tailgates, to advanced chassis and driver assistance technologies.

Designed and engineered at Land Rover's development centres in the UK, the new Range Rover will be produced in a new, state-of-the-art manufacturing facility at Solihull, UK - employing the latest low-energy aluminium body construction technologies.

On sale from September 2012 [market dependent] with customer deliveries scheduled to start from early 2013, the all-new Range Rover will be a truly global car, available in over 160 markets worldwide.

Photos of the 2013 Range Rover have been leaked!

2013_range_rover

Based on a comparison with spy photos of the car wearing skimpy camouflage, the pictures seen here seem real. A first glance, you will notice that the new SUV carries new styling broadly influenced by the popular Evoque.

Fresh fashion sense won’t be the only improvement, and hardly the most important. That’s because Jaguar Land Rover also transitioned the Range Rover to aluminum underpinnings, saving the swanky SUV some 1,000 lbs in curb weight.

Engine options wil include the 5.0-liter V8 found in the outgoing model and possibly the 3.0-liter supercharged six cylinder, which will be more viable considering the car’s reduced weight. The supercharged powerplant could offer competent power and better fuel economy, which will improve further in coming years when the company offers a hybrid version.

Yesterday marked the 49th anniversary of one of the biggest train robberies of all time involving two Land Rovers

Land_rover_logo
On August 8th in 1963, the 15 thieves involved in the Great Train Robbery, one of the most famous heists of all time, escape in an ex-British Army truck and two stolen Land Rover four-wheel drive all-terrain vehicles, making off with some $7 million in stolen loot.

The mastermind of the Great Train Robbery was Bruce Reynolds, a known burglar and armed robber. Inspired by the railroad heists of the Wild West in America, Reynolds and 14 other men wearing ski masks and helmets held up the Royal Mail train heading between Glasgow, Scotland, and London, England. They used a false red signal to get the train to stop, then hit the driver with an iron bar, seriously injuring him, in order to gain control of the train. The thieves loaded 120 mailbags filled with the equivalent of $7 million in used bank notes into their Land Rovers and sped off. The vehicles had been stolen in central London and marked with identical license plates in order to confuse the police.

In their hideout at Leatherslade Farm in Buckinghamshire, England, the robbers divided their loot. Viewed as folk heroes by the public for the audacious scale of their crime and their flight from justice, 12 of the 15 robbers nevertheless were eventually captured. In all, the gang of thieves received a total sentence of some 300 years. One of them, a small-time hood named Ronnie Biggs, escaped from prison after just 15 months and underwent plastic surgery to change his appearance. He fled the country and eluded capture for years, finally giving himself up in 2001 when he returned from Brazil voluntarily to serve the 28 years remaining in his sentence.

The two Land Rovers used in the robbery were discovered at the thieves' hideout; a car enthusiast still owns one of them today. Produced by the British-based Rover Company, the Land Rover made its debut at the Amsterdam Motor Show in 1948. It was modeled after the four-wheel drive American-made Jeeps used by the British War Department during World War II and was made of cheaper, readily available aluminum alloy due to the postwar shortage of steel. By 1960, Land Rover production had reached 500,000 vehicles per year, and the all-terrain vehicle had become popular in all types of climates--desert, jungle and city--around the world. Rover later introduced an upscale version called the Range Rover, which become another bestseller for the company. The German automaker BMW purchased Rover in 1994, but split the brand six years later, selling the Land Rover name to Ford Motor Company. In 2008, Ford sold Land Rover, along with Jaguar, to Tata Motors Ltd., India's top automaker.

The 2013 Range Rover Sport knows no boundaries

Thanks for sharing a great story about or service department, Nance!

Yelp

"I take my Discovery to Land Rover Redwood City for service and I am always treated well.  Recently, I took my car to a smog station for certification and the guy broke my key off in the ignition.  Thankfully I noticed before I pulled off the lot or I am sure that I would have been stuck with the repair bill.  The smog guy claimed that he had no idea that it happened but he would pay for the repair. I took the car to the Land Rover Redwood City and they were willing to remove the broken part of the key and then replace the key.  The charge would be only the price of the key replacement, around $300.  Not cheap I know, but owning any High Line car is not cheap when it comes to repairs or service. The dealership took quite along time before he said that they did not have the tools to remove the key.  However they gave the smog guy the choice of paying to replace the ignition or getting a locksmith out to the dealership to have one last try. All the while the smog guy is claiming that the dealership is a rip off and even the locksmith who comes out and does finally remove the broken key part is saying that the dealership is charging too much for the key.  I go to the locksmith to see if he can make the key for less and after an hour he finally admits that he can't make the new key and I will have to go back to the dealer. So after a wasted day, I go back to Land Rover of Redwood city and get my new key made. Bottom line...the smog guy and the locksmith both trashed the dealer but in this case the dealership was being more that fair and accommodating to both me and the smog guy paying the bill. If you want it done right you may want to bring it to a dealer.  Chris and Brian from the service depatment are nice and do a professional job." - Nance M.
