A stylish concept is getting closer and closer to becoming a reality!
Land Rover DC100 edges closer to production
The new Defender can do to the Land Rover badge and image what the smash-hit Evoque did for the Range Rover. That is the view of Land Rover’s design director, Gerry McGovern.
It is now over a year since Land Rover revealed the DC100 concept and began touring it worldwide at shows, getting feedback. “The concept got the thumbs-up,” said McGovern, “and 90 per cent of the 250,000 people we spoke to loved it.”
McGovern said design work on the Defender replacement had progressed and various different concepts had been looked at internally in addition to the DC100, ahead of a planned introduction in “the middle of the decade”.
He believes the “new Defender can do for Land Rover what the Evoque did for Range Rover”, bringing a new, more style-conscious buyer to the Defender and the Land Rover brand.
Although style is promised, it will not be at the expense of function. “We need a new Defender for a new generation,” said McGovern, “so it has to be relevant and desirable to a modern audience, but it has to have the essence of the Defender. James Bond needs to be able to kick the hell out of it and it will still be able to get up for more.”
McGovern understands the sensitivity of the new Defender project due to the current car’s staunch fan base, but he said it couldn’t “be developed through rose-tinted spectacles”.
He said: “A like-for-like replacement for the Defender would not be appropriate and wouldn’t be legal with safety legislation. We can still capture the essence of the past but in a modern way.”

The 2013 LR2 takes on mud, water, and rocky hills with ease!
Land Rover’s LR2 takes ‘road less traveled’
We’re on the grounds—65,000 wild acres—of the world’s largest log hotel, the Fairmont Le Chateau Montebello.
Land Rover Canada uses part of the forest for its Land Rover Experience Driving School. For us, however, our hosts have carved out a testing route through mud and water and over rocky hills to show off the redesigned 2013 Land Rover LR2’s capabilities.
It’s interesting that most buyers who will shell out $37,250 to $42,350 for the LR2, depending on which of the three trim levels they select, generally will never take it off road. But they could, as we learned. And we also learned to respect and appreciate the off-road toughness of this car-based premium compact SUV.
In 2012, Land Rover has enjoyed 20 percent sales growth in North America (41 percent global growth) and even higher brand awareness. Much of that is attributable to its premium compact sibling, the Evoque, which was named North American Truck of the Year.
But the LR2 is more representative of the brand’s swagger and DNA. For 2013, it’s got a new 2.0-liter turbocharged engine (240 horsepower, 250 lb.-ft. of torque) that’s lighter and more powerful than the 3.2-liter inline six it replaces.
Driving from Montreal to the test facility, we experience the LR2’s sophisticated ride on highways, through construction zones, and over back roads with varying degrees of smoothness and frost heaves.
Snow squalls and wind buffet the LR2, but we’re cozy in the cabin with heated seats and steering wheel. The available cold weather package adds a heated windshield and washer nozzle jets (for both headlamps and windshield).
Those washers got a good workout as my co-driver, Greg Carloss of Maryland Public Broadcasting’s MotorWeek TV magazine, and I make a pact to finish the off-road course with the muddiest LR2. We pretty much accomplished that, and also muddied the HD camera he affixed to various surfaces of the LR2.
Getting in and out of the vehicle, even in relatively dry spots, resulted in mud being spread over the fine leather and carpet of the LR2’s interior. The LR2 has that air of aristocratic luxury that is used to such wilderness treatment and easy cleanup. If this LR2 were put up on a lift, it certainly would show some serious scratches on its skid plates.
Perhaps the best piece of video from this excursion came in a sand pit after we’d left the mud and water temporarily behind. From behind the steering wheel (did we say the LR2 offers the driver a commanding view?) it looked as though we were driving over a physical cliff.
“Feet off the gas and brake,”we’re advised. “Let the Hill Descent Control (HDC) do its work.”As the nose pitched down (think the old rollercoaster rides at Revere Beach or Nantasket), we braced for a rocket-like downhill run. Instead, the HDC took over and eased us down smoothly.
The previous generation of LR2s had a dial to select the available Terrain Response settings—general driving, grass-gravel-snow, mud-and-ruts, and sand. The new version has buttons. A small change, but somehow not as intimidating.
The system’s algorithms are now such that all the traction, stability, and anti-roll feedback is factored in to the all-wheel-drive’s control module as are Corner Brake Control (CBC), Emergency Brake Assist (EBA), the Hill Descent Control, and Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) systems.
As a result, all-wheel-drive has been taken to a new level.
The LR2’s AWD system is front-wheeldrive weighted; only sending a bit of torque to the rear wheels under normal conditions, but the system can pre-engage at rest to reduce wheel-spin from standing starts. Land Rover feels it gives the benefits of full-time AWD with the efficiency and fuel economy of an on-demand system.
Part of the Land Rover tradition is that functionality helps drive design. Narrow Apillars (windshield posts) improve visibility as do the hood castellations that help aim the LR2 on the track, whether paved or rutted. The short overhangs and high underbody (8.26-inch ground clearance) help maximize approach and departure angles—the offroader’s version of scraping the front or rear of a car when entering or leaving a steep driveway.

The amazing Evoque continues to live up to its well-deserved reputation!
Evoque - a cool Range Rover
It is only just over a year since Land Rover launched the Range Rover Evoque - but in that time it has already collected top awards and Victoria Beckham has brought out a special edition of the vehicle, writes Bryan Longworth.
So is the Evoque - which is built at Halewood - really that good? I have just been taking a longer look at the Evoque following the launch in Scotland last year and the answer is that it is certainly another world-beating vehicle from Land Rover.
Land Rover has produced some of the world’s top 4x4 vehicles and with the Evoque, the smallest and lightest Range Rover ever produced, they have managed it again.
However, the type of customer buying Evoque will be using it mainly on road because it is that sort of vehicle as I discovered during my test period - which included plenty of motorway driving where it provided superbly comfortable motoring.
Owners taking the Evoque off-road will find it is a very capable performer. I successfully drove the vehicle over some very demanding routes over steep hills and muddy tracks in the Scottish borders - there is a wading depth of 500mm for adventurous owners driving through water.
My test car was the five-door Prestige with the 2.2-litre diesel engine with six-speed automatic transmission.
It was also kitted out with optional extras costing £4,425 that included a powered tailgate, television, surround camera system, touch screen display, blind spot monitoring and park assist.
The luxurious leather interior with grey oak wood and brushed aluminium was like living in a five-star hotel and once again Land Rover have got it just right with easy-to-see instruments and well- designed controls plus the legendary technical equipment that ensures the vehicle keeps going in the most difficult driving conditions.
The steering, road holding and road comfort levels were just right. I liked the natty mini spotlights that illuminated the ground outside the two front doors for the driver and front passenger.
At the rear of the roomy interior is a large load area that can be extended by folding the rear seats.

Get all of the details on the stylish creation by A. Kahn Design, the Defender Concept!
I say! Harris Tweed Land Rover launched
British designer Afzal Kahn has a habit of turning some of the most iconic cars on the road into fashion statements.
He insists 'the road is his catwalk', and has created an auto accessory business in A. Kahn Design that has survived for more than 20 years thanks to his creative thinking.
Now Kahn has created a Land Rover Defender concept, complete with Harris Tweed.
Its full name is 'The Defender Concept 17 Wide Body - Harris Tweed Prototype' and falls perfectly in line with Kahn's philosophy of investing in the best of British manufacturing.
The main features of the Kahn Defender include a new wide track arch kit with a very aggressive look. Also included in the kit are vented headlight surrounds, side vents with mesh, clear front light lenses and more.
But perhaps its most striking feature is the car's Harris Tweed interior, which has been hand-woven from the Outer Hebrides. It's an incredibly high-quality material, made using wool local to the Isles of Harris, Lewis, Uist and Barra.
Kahn has interwoven the tweed throughout the interior, which is complemented by black quilted nappa leather. Silver and red contrast stitching courses through the Defender along the door trim, roof lining and more.
Kahn's vision is present all over the car, with incredible attention to detail shown on the most common areas. The centre glove box for example comes in black quilted nappa leather and grey alcantara, with red and silver contrast stitching. Aluminum machined pedals complete the overall package.
If that doesn't float your boat then consider the car's very own Kahn wheels. State-of-the-art, the 8-inch 1983 Defender wheels can be finished in any colour of choice and fit all original centre caps. The concept, according to us, is the perfect marriage of cutting-edge fashion and Land Rover's design excellence.
Kahn insists that he's able to impart a buyer's individual personality into the Defender, projecting their personally-requested style choices throughout the car. Want a car with the same interior as your living room, he says? He can do it.
We'd put an order in for one, but sadly our walls are covered in woodchip and a £5 market-stall print of the Mona Lisa.

Decisions, decisions...Range Rover tempts us with two new Limited Edition models!
2013 Range Rover Sport debuts with Limited Edition models
Land Rover has unveiled their entire 2013 model lineup at the Los Angeles Auto Show and have revealed two new Limited Edition Range Rover Sport models for the U.S. market. Also making its U.S. auto show debut is the all-new 2013 Land Rover Range Rover, the world’s first all-aluminum SUV. In addition to the two new Limited Edition models, the new 2013 Range Rover Sport will feature new exterior treatments, new interior options and a new towing package on the high-performance model.
The Range Rover Sport received new exterior styling for the 2012 model year, and to compliment those changes, the 2013 Sport will feature some new exterior treatments that will set it apart from the crowd. The new 2013 Sport will be featured with a new five-spoke cast alloy wheel design in Sparkle Silver that will be standard on the Range Rover Sport Supercharged.
And to show off the new stylish wheels even more, there will be red Brembo brake calipers that can be seen through the new five spokes. They will come standard on the Supercharged model, but customers who don't want to be so conspicuous can opt for black high performance brakes at no additional cost. There will also be a wider choice of interior color combinations and a new optional towing package available on the new Range Rover Sport for the first time.
The Supercharged will still feature an Eaton supercharger that bumps up the horsepower of the Jaguar sourced V8 to 510, with 461 foot-pounds of torque. It also adds a sport-tuned suspension, adaptive Xenon headlights with washers, paddle shifters, a 480-watt stereo with Sirius satellite radio, bright mesh grille and side vents, exhaust extensions, and its own Oxford leathers.
2013 Range Rover Sport Supercharged Limited Edition
The big news at the show was the addition of two new limited edition models that will be added for 2013. The Supercharged Limited Edition and GT Limited Edition will be available for the first time in limited numbers. The two new models will be available for U.S. customers and will come in two color choices.
Land Rover hasn’t released detailed information on the new limited edition models, but the 2013 Range Rover Sport Supercharged Limited Edition for the U.S. market, will feature a combination of new luxurious interior appointments and exterior design changes that will differentiate it over the standard Supercharged model. There will only be 300 units being produced in Santorini Black, and 200 units in Fuji White for the 2013 Supercharged Limited Edition.
2013 Range Rover Sport GT Limited Edition
The 2013 Range Rover Sport GT Limited Edition also offers unique luxury interior and distinctive exterior design details. Land Rover says the HSE specification vehicle will also get “other popular equipment” that will set it apart from the standard model. Outside, that will include an extended rear roof spoiler, unique rear chrome exhaust treatments and 20-inch black five spoke alloy wheels.
Inside the luxury cabin, it will feature steering wheel mounted shift paddles, a premium LOGIC 7 audio system with satellite radio and HD Radio. A limited number of 450 will be built in Santorini Black, with an additional 300 units being produced in Fuji White.
Land Rover hasn’t released pricing on the sporty 2013 Range Rover Sport Supercharged and Range Rover Sport GT Limited Editions, but we know the limited number will be coming to U.S. showrooms early in 2013.

Land Rover and its sister company prove that they know how to make an entrance in Hollywood!
Range Rover, Jaguar F-Type make splashy Hollywood debut
If you want to make a grand entrance, Land Rover and Jaguar decided there was no better way than to try to upstage Moses, er, Charlton Heston, when he parted the Red Sea.
The new Range Rover SUV and Jaguar F-Type made spectacular debuts last night on the Paramount Studios movie lot in order to heighten anticipation ahead of press days for the Los Angeles Auto Show.
The two British brands, owned by India's Tata Motors, once again created a lake by flooding a famous parking lot. It's there that Heston, as Moses, perfomed a miracle in the movie The Ten Commandments and Jim Carrey tried to escape a cloistered life by boat in The Truman Show. The backdrop was a movie screen flashing images of the vehicles in action and Great Britain's Union Jack fluttering in the breeze.
The scene gave Land Rover a chance to send the Range Rover splashing through tire-high water to get to the review stand. The Jaguar made an equally grand entrance through billowing fog, while a throng that included a few celebs and aging British rockers sipped Pimm Cups and other thoroughly English cocktails.
Once they hit the stand, guests thronged around both vehicles to discover the Range Rover's new, cleaner lines and its simplified cockpit in which the glovebox and other storage containers have been made virtually invisible. The rear bench seats now have power recline with massage units. And a new system senses the terrain and adjusts the suspension and traction accordingly.
The Jaguar F-Type gets its own makeover. It will come with three supercharged engines, ranging from 340 to 495 horsepower. There's a sport suspension with active damping, assessing body motion and rolls 100 times a second and acting to counteract the effect.
"This a full-size, full-blooded sports car," said emcee Jon Briggs to the crowd. No one disagreed.

Jaguar Land Rover Debuts Three All-New British Vehicles at 2012 Los Angeles International Automobile Show
Jaguar Land Rover will draw the world's attention to all things British with the debut of three exciting new luxury automobiles in the U.S. at the 2012 Los Angeles International Automobile Show, November 28 – December 9.
"This year's Los Angeles Auto show is one of the most significant U.S. shows in years for Jaguar Land Rover as we launch a true modern day British invasion with the debut of three breakthrough new products," said Jaguar Land Rover North America President, Andy Goss. "Jaguar Land Rover is making major strides to grow the business with highly targeted new products. The new Jaguar F-TYPE, Jaguar XFR-S and all new Range Rover will all make a major impact, specifically in the United States, which will be the world's largest market for all three vehicles."
Making its global debut at the show will be the XFR-S model, the fastest and most powerful sedan Jaguar has ever produced. This is the second model in the ultra-high performance R-S range, with just 100 sedans being offered for the 2014 model year in the U.S. market - making it one of the most exclusive Jaguar models ever.
Making its U.S. Auto Show Debut in Los Angeles is the all-new 2013 Land Rover Range Rover. The world's first SUV with a lightweight all-aluminum body, the new Range Rover takes the capabilities of the marque's flagship to a new level, with greater luxury and refinement. The U.S. specification vehicle with the naturally-aspirated 5-liter V8 will be approximately 700lbs lighter than the outgoing equivalent. This new aluminum platform delivers significant enhancements in performance and agility, along with an improvement in fuel economy and reduction in CO2 emissions. The new Range Rover goes on sale in December, 2012, starting at $83,500.
Making its U.S. Auto Show Debut in Los Angeles is the 2014 Jaguar F-TYPE, displayed for the first time with the Black Pack (high gloss black body trim). An all-new two-seat soft-top convertible sports car built on a front-engine; lightweight aluminum architecture with rear-wheel drive, Jaguar has engineered the F-TYPE to be a true high-performance sports car. The Jaguar F-TYPE combines low vehicle weight (starting at 3,521 pounds), high power (340hp, 380hp and 495hp versions) and superb aerodynamics to achieve a pure sports car experience, yet with Jaguar elegance. F-TYPE goes on sale in early summer, 2013, starting at $69,000.

The Race2Recovery team sponsored by Land Rover is gearing up for the Dakar Rally!
DAKAR 2013 – Land Rover Race2Recovery
Race2Recovery, the group of predominantly injured soldiers aiming to become the first disabled team to complete the gruelling Dakar Rally, today visited Tedworth House Personnel Recovery Centre (PRC) in Tidworth, Wiltshire, bringing together the whole race team and its array of race and support vehicles for one final time before the fleet is shipped out to South America.
With less than 50 days to go until the start of their 2013 Dakar Rally challenge, Race2Recovery has already raised £100,000 for Tedworth House and is committed to continuing this fundraising drive.
The team spoke about their excitement and anticipation ahead of the race. They were also on-hand to demonstrate their race vehicles, including Land-Rover based Wildcats, 4×4 race support truck and huge 8×8 service area support trucks, which they have been working on day-and-night in order to have them fully prepared ahead of their shipping to South America on Thursday (22nd November). Their adventure is being made possible by support from Land Rover and the Endeavour Fund set-up by The Royal Foundation of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry.
Earlier in the day, the team had visited Thruxton Circuit, located seven miles from Tedworth PRC, where they took part in a photo shoot at the famous race track.
The team, whose motto is ‘beyond injury – achieving the extraordinary’, consists of people from all backgrounds and walks of life: injured servicemen, former soldiers, sailors and airmen, and generous people with no military background who have given their time and commitment to the endeavour.
Based in Tidworth, Wiltshire, Tedworth House is one of six Personnel Recovery Centres that have been established as part of the Defence Recovery Capability. The Defence Recovery Capability is an MOD-led initiative in partnership with Help for Heroes and The Royal British Legion to ensure wounded, injured and sick servicemen and women have access to the key resources they need as they recover.
Captain Tony Harris, 31, one of Race2Recovery’s rally drivers who is a below the knee amputee as a result of injuries suffered while serving in Afghanistan, said: “I’m delighted that Race2Recovery is able to come together as a full team one last time before we wave goodbye to our vehicles when we ship them to South America for January’s Dakar Rally. I’m particularly pleased that we’re able to celebrate here at Tedworth House Personnel Recovery Centre, which has been the recipient of our ongoing fundraising activity. We’re very proud to have raised over £100,000 to date and we hope that our continued efforts as a successful rally-raid team will continue to see donations increase, directly benefitting our country’s injured servicemen and women.”
Team navigator Corporal Tom Neathway, 28, who lost both legs and his left arm as the result of a booby trap explosion when serving in Afghanistan, said: “It’s great to come together as a team to celebrate the fact that, in only 18 months, we have established a highly capable rally raid team and that we’re set to race in our ultimate goal, the 2013 Dakar Rally. We really believe in our motto, Beyond Injury – Achieving The Extraordinary, and I really feel that Race2Recovery can show people that, despite facing adversity, illness or injury, it’s still possible to do great things. The whole focus of our Race2Recovery project has been about the team’s abilities, rather than disabilities, and I hope this is a message that we can communicate to people who may find themselves in similar situations to myself or other members of the team.”
One of the civilian members of the team is Frenchwoman Cathy Derousseaux who, whilst only 24, has already established a career as a professional rally co-driver. Cathy, goddaughter to Dakar legend and three-time winner Pierre Lartigue, competed in the Africa Eco-Race and is a two-time winner of the French Women’s Rally Championship. She said: “It’s an honour to be part of such a fantastic project and to race as part of a truly inspirational team. I’m pleased that I can bring my rallying experience to the team but I’m also very aware that the Race2Recovery team, in a very short space of time, has become a strong and skilled outfit in its own right. We’re determined to complete the Dakar and I have full faith in both the race and support crews that we can achieve our goal. We’re also over the moon that the campaign continues to raise money through its charity fundraising which is benefitting Tedworth House Personnel Recovery Centre.”
On 7th November it was announced that Race2Recovery had been awarded the first ever grant from the Endeavour Fund, set up by The Royal Foundation of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry. The Endeavour Fund has been created by The Royal Foundation to enable more wounded and injured servicemen and women to take part in expeditions and sporting challenges as part of their recovery. The Fund will offer seed funding for new endeavours and will help emerging initiatives with advice, hands-on support and mentoring.

The Queen of England's customized Land Rover is going up on the auction block!
Queen's Landrover Up For Sale
Fantatsic news for classic automobile-loving Royalists - the Queen's old landrover is up for sale.
Commissioned for the Queen and owned by the MoD, the 1978 Land Rover Royal Review State V Series III was modified in April 1979 by REME Central Workshops in Donnington, and fitted with a traffic light system allowing the Queen to signal the driver to stop, slow or start.
Having covered just 1,892 miles from new, this unique feature, as well as double rear doors and rear retractable step, remain in place and in full working order, setting this Land Rover aside from the other 440,000 Series III models built between 1971 and 1985.
The vehicle has an estimate of just $25,000, but seems likely to go for more than that when it goes under the hammer on 24 November.

This convertible concept car might not be the only thing that Land Rover has up its sleeve!
Land Rover Planning Defender Truck and 10+ Other New SUVs by 2020
Potentially one of the most significant variants is the three-row Range Rover Evoque. For those who don’t want a Range Rover Sport or don’t want the three-row Land Rover LR4, an extra-large Range Rover Evoque could keep buyers within the automaker’s family. We’ve previously reported on the sub-Evoque crossover, which could carry a price below that of the 2013 Evoque’s newly lowered $41,995 MSRP. And it’s impossible to forget about the Evoque convertible, which can be seen in concept form above.

The fourth generation Range Rover impressively handles all that the mountains of Morocco throw at it!
Latest Solihull-born Range Rover put through its paces
The approach to the upper reaches of the High Atlas in Morocco is not for the faint hearted.
Single track roads dissolve into narrow gravel paths that drop precariously away as you climb the Route de Asni in the shadow of snow-capped Mount Toubkal.
Boulders pock-mark the trail every inch of the way and sheer rock faces threaten to crumble into an avalanche of jagged rubble at any moment.
There are cars capable of dealing with conditions like these, but none will ride the moguls, sluice through an unprecedented depth of water and climb the crags like the new fourth generation Range Rover, made in leafy Solihull.
The top brass at Land Rover, who joined us for a 400-mile trek from Essaouira on the Atlantic coast to the Atlas Mountains via Morocco’s magical city of Marrakech, describe the new Range Rover as the world’s most refined and capable luxury SUV.
And they were prepared to prove it on an unforgettable road trip that fiercely examined every aspect of the car’s time-honoured talents.
Taking the Range Rover up a peg from the current model was never going to be easy but what design chief Gerry McGovern and his engineers have achieved is simply sensational.
When it comes to finding a vehicle that excels in every imaginable department the new Range Rover has no equal – it’s that good.
Not only does the iconic off-roader look a million dollars with its more elegant, less aggressive, profile, ‘floating’ roofline and clamshell bonnet but being built with an all-aluminium body it is also 39 per cent lighter than the outgoing steel version that has been around for the past decade.
That means better fuel consumption, stronger performance, improved handling and the means to include a V6 diesel engine for the first time as passengers enjoy even better rear legroom thanks to the car’s longer wheelbase.
And the improvements don’t stop there. Luxury and refinement has also moved up a notch.
There are premium veneers, Bridge of Weir leathers and options like a new two-seat Executive Class rear package.
It’s quiet inside, thanks to acoustic lamination of the glass areas, sound-absorbing foam and dual-isolated engine mounts that together cut noise levels to near zero.
Among the new innovations is the next generation of Land Rover’s Terrain Response set-up which analyses driving conditions and automatically selects the most suitable vehicle setting for the driver. You can still manually switch to the likes of grass, gravel, snow, rock crawl, mud, ruts and general driving but the auto option is a boon, as we found when leaving the smooth roads of Essaouira for a five-mile ribbon of coastal dunes accessed via a rutted trail.
The steepest of sandhills and loose, unstable ground posed no problem for the Range Rover before we turned off for a road route to Marrakech, frequently finding the desert roads blocked by a mayhem of bartering as market traders, herdsmen and families bought and sold sheep for celebrating the Eid festival that marks the end of Ramadan fasting.
This was Morocco as the mind’s eye would imagine it – loud, colourful and intoxicating. It was also 21st century engineering at its finest alongside youngsters on donkeys and old saloons with ‘seating’ for 16 and a couple of goats.
The numbers vary a bit, too. It will cost you a pocketful of dirhams short of £98,395 to snap up the 5.0-litre V8 supercharged Range Rover that will spearhead the new range when it arrives towards the end of the year.
More popular will be the new 258PS V6 diesel version, which is capable of an average 37.7 miles per gallon and emissions of 196g/km, making it the cleanest ever Range Rover.
The faster roads of the final stretch towards Marrakech confirmed that this car will give fans of the existing V8 diesel – now with an improved 32.5mpg – something to think about.
Land Rover says that buyers wishing to personalise their car can choose from no fewer than 18,000 interior and exterior combinations, near guaranteeing exclusivity.
And while prices start at £71,295 for a 3.0-litre TDV6 Vogue model and £78,095 for the V8 equivalent, adding options like the 1,700-Watt, 29-speaker Meridian sound system can take top-spec Autobiography versions, along with the 5.0 supercharged model, close to the ton. Either way, you’ll have a car that feels as at home cruising effortlessly along the motorway as it does climbing up the side of a mountain.
Oh, and yes, it will cope with the school run, too.

Land Rover sponsors a Dakar Rally team, providing training and helping to raise donations
Land Rover Provides Desert Training For RACE2RECOVERY Wounded Soldiers Rally Team
The Race2Recovery (R2R) team of wounded soldiers planning to enter the 2013 Dakar Rally with support from Land Rover, successfully conducted a major desert training exercise - code named 'Bedouin Adventure' - in remote regions of Morocco last week.
By undertaking the most gruelling off-road racing challenge in the world next year, R2R is determined to demonstrate enduring human spirit, with the Dakar event's first ever amputee driver and co-driver entry overcoming the challenges of their injuries and raising money for Help for Heroes and the Tedworth House Personnel Recovery Centre. The provision of training and expertise by Land Rover's world renowned Land Rover Experience (LRE) team boasts members who have expert Dakar knowledge, having participated in the annual endurance race on multiple occasions.
For the training exercise, Land Rover supplied three 110 Defenders with diesel engines and manual transmissions, being ideal training tools. R2R team driving coach Mark Cullum explained: "Our training in Morocco demanded maximum alertness, good observation, stamina and a flexible mindset."
Driving south east from R2R's coastal base at Essaouira, the team was introduced to the complexities of advanced route selection when faced with negotiating jebels, boulder fields, wadis, sand seas and razor dunes.
Speaking during a brief halt in the Atlas Mountains on the exercise's final day, Captain Tony Harris commented: "Our four days of training in Morocco have been incredibly productive and will prove invaluable in preparing the team for the rigours of the 2013 Dakar.
"Driving more than 500 km per day in temperatures up to 37 degrees and over 2,000 metre high peaks en-route to the desert, with rough camping alongside our vehicles for three nights, enabled our team members to experience this unforgiving and demanding environment and develop essential skills for ensuring success on next year's Dakar rally."
Land Rover's sponsorship of the Race2Recovery project is designed to enable a 31-strong amateur rally team, which includes seriously wounded service personnel, to realise their ambition of completing the world-renowned Dakar Rally Raid. Probably the world's toughest motorsport event, the Dakar covers over 5,000 miles (9,000 km) in 15 days through Peru, Argentina and Chile in January 2013.
"While constantly focusing on the core rally-raid driving disciplines of 'traction, ground clearance and stability', our time in Morocco exposed team members to a wide range of very different terrains for the first time," added Mark Cullum. "Biggest lessons learned were ground appreciation - the surface can change surprisingly quickly - and the importance of maintaining momentum over varying terrain, while simultaneously demonstrating mechanical sympathy for the vehicle."
In conclusion Captain Harris added: "There is no room for error on the Dakar and aggressive driving or lack of concentration can quickly lead to failure and retirement. The key overall approach to the training and ultimately to the Dakar must be the application of a restrained, sympathetic and alert driving style. Quick consistency is more important than outright pace, and practising desert driving in Morocco with Land Rover's support was of paramount importance."
The four Qt Wildcat rally-raid vehicles that Race2Recovery will enter in the 2013 Dakar are based on the Land Rover Defender and share running gear and some external visual similarities. Several elements of standard Land Rover vehicles are retained on the Wildcat including engines, axles and some cosmetic parts.

Next Generation Land Rover Defender Heading to US
[[posterous-content:pid___0]]
When the next-generation Land Rover Defender makes its eventual debut, Americans can get excited that the rugged SUV will make its way to the US.
Back at last year’s Los Angeles Auto Show, the Land Rover DC100 Concepts hinted at the Defender’s return, a model that hasn’t graced American shores since 1997. But at the recent Paris Motor Show, Jaguar Land Rover North America CEO Andy Goss confirmed that the British automaker is focusing on the North American market and that the next-generation Defender will be a global product.
That means the new Defender will be engineered to pass America’s stringent crash safety and emissions standards, and will be part of Land Rover’s onslaught of new products. According to Land Rover’s design director Gerry McGovern, the brand knows what they’re “going to be doing over the next five, six, seven years.”
That might give some insight as to when we can expect the Defender. Originally speculated to make a debut in 2015, it could come as late as 2017. For now, we’ll have to live with the DC100 concepts as to give us some insight as to the direction Land Rover hopes to take its vehicles in the future.
Undoubtedly Land Rover is working hard on making the Defender a global presence yet again. The SUV is set to make an appearance in the next James Bond film, Skyfall.

Land Rover's commitment to sustainabilty has helped them reduce emissions and create new jobs!
Offsetting in Guatemala
As part of a wide-ranging commitment to sustainable business development, Land Rover and partner ClimateCare are investing in a geothermal power plant at the Amatitlan Geothermal Field in Guatemala.
The project is part of Land Rover's portfolio planned to offset manufacturing assembly CO2 emissions as well as tailpipe CO2 emissions for the first 45,000 miles/72,000 km of driving in new vehicles sold in ten countries worldwide. Using state-of-the-art technology, the power plant aims to generate renewable energy for use on the national grid. Steam is extracted from a series of wells and used to drive two large turbines. The steam is then condensed and fed back into the ground through an injection well. This initiative is designed to harness the power of heat stored beneath the surface to produce a clean, sustainable and reliable electricity source. Increasing capacity to meet growing national demand in the process. As well as cutting emissions and providing greater stability to consumers and the economy, the Amatitlan plant created 500 construction jobs, 20 permanent jobs and also supported the local service industries. There are further environmental benefits too. A programme to reduce the threat of local flooding has seen repairs to road infrastructure and a reforestation project involving the planting of 5,000 new trees.

Land Rover May Add Subcompact Crossover Under Range Rover Evoque
First we saw the crazy Range Rover Evoque convertible concept before hearing rumors that Land Rover wanted to expand the Evoque line with a seven-seat version of the internationally popular crossover. A baby Range Rover Evoque may be next on the automaker’s list, according to a new report from Automotive News.
Though sales of the Range Rover Evoque are currently only limited by the number of models Land Rover can produce, a company spokesman told the publication that with so much attention on sustainability (and fuel economy), “you could argue that smaller and lighter is the way to go.”
With the new flagship Range Rover SUV losing more than 700 pounds compared to its predecessor, the company has clearly shown that weight loss is a key topic for its engineers. As for a subcompact crossover placed below the Range Rover Evoque, such a vehicle could compete in price with the BMW X1 and Audi Q3, not to mention the Land Rover LR2. Though a new baby Evoque could be just right for somewhat affluent urban style-setters everywhere, we wonder how it would affect sales of the LR2. Refreshed for the 2013 model year, the Land Rover LR2 is now powered by the 240-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter I-4 in the Evoque, and we’d be surprised if a baby Evoque didn’t include that as one engine option. The 2013 LR2 costs $37,250 to start while the Evoque starts in the mid-$40,000 range.
The 2013 BMW X1 starts at $31,545; a small Range Rover could fit well in that price range and help increase Land Rover’s average fuel economy numbers, as well.

John Edwards, Land Rover Global Brand Director said during the evening: "The Range Rover is a British icon and the all-new model revealed this evening has set the benchmark for luxury in SUVs. It is quieter, smoother and lighter than any vehicle in its class."
Edwards continued: "Like the Royal Ballet School, Land Rover is quintessentially British and has been setting world standards in performance and capability for many years. We wanted to launch the All-New Range Rover in the UK and White Lodge was the perfect venue."

2012 Concept 17 Defender by A. Kahn Design previewed
The British aftermarket specialists at A. Kahn Design have recently previewed their latest creation, a new styling kit for the Land Rover Defender, named the 2012 Concept 17 Defender.
A Kahn Design is mostly known for tuning larger SUVs but lately the company was quite busy developing just about everything you can imagine on the Range Rover Evoque and, after finally coming to its sense, the British tuner is going after an iconic model, the Land Rover Defender. According to the tuning company, the SUV in question has been named the 2012 Concept 17 Defender and it should hit the market over the following months.
“The neat, slim line frame of the 2012 Concept 17 Defender by A. Kahn Design set for release in the coming months ahead has created such a buzz that it made sense to escape the noise, and discuss just what is getting the industry talking”, as the tuner is saying in its official press release.
The 2012 Concept 17 Defender is getting a spare wheel cover, mud flaps or a bespoke paint job which can also be bullet proof as an optional feature and the Kahn 8×18 1983 RS Defender wheels, which will replace the stock ones. More details on the 2012 Concept 17 Defender will be announced over the following months.

The all-new Range Rover is the most capable and most luxurious Land Rover yet. Lighter, stronger and with new levels of refinement, the Range Rover reinforces its position as the world's finest luxury SUV.
The fourth generation of the unique Range Rover line, the all-new model has been developed from the ground up, capturing the innovative spirit and iconic design of the original model which changed the world of motoring when it was launched over 40 years ago.
The world's first SUV with a revolutionary lightweight all-aluminium monocoque body structure is 39 per cent lighter than the steel body in the outgoing model enabling total vehicle weight savings of up to 420kg.
The lightweight aluminium platform has delivered significant enhancements in performance and agility, along with a transformation in fuel economy and CO2 emissions.
In addition to the strong and rigid lightweight body, an all-new aluminium front and rear chassis architecture has been developed with completely re-engineered four-corner air suspension. While the luxurious ride has been retained, the vehicle's handling and agility have been significantly improved. The new suspension architecture delivers flatter, more confident cornering, with natural and intuitive steering feel.
John Edwards, Land Rover Global Brand Director, said: "The new Range Rover preserves the essential, unique character of the vehicle - that special blend of luxury, performance and unmatched all-terrain capability. However, its clean sheet design and revolutionary lightweight construction have enabled us to transform the experience for luxury vehicle customers, with a step change in comfort, refinement and handling."
The all-new Range Rover has a clean and elegant shape which is derived from a fresh new interpretation of Range Rover design cues. While instantly recognisable as a Range Rover, the new vehicle takes a significant step forward with a bold evolution of the model's iconic design language.
"Designing the next generation Range Rover, following over forty years of success, came with a huge responsibility to protect the DNA of such an icon," said Gerry McGovern, Land Rover Design Director and Chief Creative Officer.
"Our design team worked incredibly hard to capture the elegant proportions and pure surfaces which have been a feature of the best Range Rover designs."
With Land Rover strength at its heart, the new model has been engineered from the ground up to be the most capable, most refined Range Rover ever.
Amongst the industry-leading innovations is a ground-breaking next-generation version of Land Rover's Terrain Response® system, which analyses the current driving conditions and automatically selects the most suitable vehicle settings for the terrain.
To ensure exceptional durability and reliability, the new model has been subjected to Land Rover's punishing on- and off-road test and development regime, with a fleet of development vehicles covering millions of miles over 18 months of arduous tests in more than 20 countries with extremes of climate and road surfaces.
Within the cabin, the all-new Range Rover provides occupants with a sensation of serene isolation, meeting the highest luxury car standards for refinement.
Measures like the rigorously optimised body structure and acoustic lamination of the windscreen and side door glass have significantly reduced noise levels, while the new suspension architecture has enabled engineers to achieve even more luxurious ride comfort and refinement.
The sumptuous interior incorporates distinctive Range Rover design cues, but executed with a very contemporary treatment, and clean, elegant surfaces which are flawlessly presented using the finest leathers and veneers. With over 118mm more legroom, the rear occupants benefit from vastly increased space and comfort, with the option of a new two-seat Executive Class seating package for the ultimate in rear-seat luxury.
To deliver the model's characteristic effortless performance, customers have the choice of refined V8 petrol engines and TDV6 and SDV8 diesel engines combining responsive performance with outstanding CO2 emissions.
The all-new Range Rover has been engineered with the latest developments in vehicle technologies, from interior luxury features such as exclusive Meridian surround sound music systems and power upper and lower tailgates, to advanced chassis and driver assistance technologies.
Designed and engineered at Land Rover's development centres in the UK, the new Range Rover will be produced in a new, state-of-the-art manufacturing facility at Solihull, UK - employing the latest low-energy aluminium body construction technologies.
On sale from September 2012 [market dependent] with customer deliveries scheduled to start from early 2013, the all-new Range Rover will be a truly global car, available in over 160 markets worldwide.
